Side Effects of Drinking Too Much Apple Cider Vinegar

The woman had osteoporosis, a condition of brittle bones rarely seen in young people. Doctors who treated the woman believe that drinking too much apple cider vinegar caused her bones leach minerals to buffer her blood acidity. They also observed that elevated levels of acid can decrease fresh bone formation. Generally, in this case, the amount of apple cider vinegar was much more than most people would consume in a single day. Plus, for many years, she did this every day.

Can Damage the Tooth Enamel

Acidic foods and drinks can damage tooth enamel. Soft drinks and fruit juices have been researched more extensively, but some study shows that the acetic acid in vinegar can also harm the enamel of the tooth. Enamel from wisdom teeth were involved in various vinegar pH levels ranging from 2.7–3.95 in one laboratory study. After four hours, the vinegar resulted in a 1–20 percent loss of minerals from the teeth.

Most importantly, this research was carried out in a laboratory rather than in the mouth, where saliva helps to buffer acidity. However, there is some evidence that dental decay can be caused by drinking too much apple cider vinegar. A case study also shows that the serious dental decay of a 15-year-old girl was caused by one cup (237 ml) of undiluted apple cider vinegar per day as a weight loss remedy.

However, Acetic acid, which is the main active ingredient in apple cider vinegar, efficiently destroys bacteria. What makes it good for mouth washing and teeth whitening is the vinegar’s antibacterial activity.

Digestive Problems

Drinking too much apple cider vinegar may cause some people to experience unpleasant digestive symptoms. Studies in humans and animals have discovered that apple cider vinegar and acetic acid may reduce appetite and encourage fullness sensations, resulting in a natural reduction in calorie consumption.

Controlled research shows that sometimes, owing to indigestion, appetite and food consumption may reduce. People who drank 25 grams (0.88 oz) of ACV recorded less appetite but also considerably more nausea, particularly when the vinegar was a component of an unpleasant drink.

Slow Down Emptying of the Stomach

Apple cider vinegar enables by decreasing the amount of food, leaving the stomach and entering the reduced digestive tract to avoid blood sugar spikes. This slows down its bloodstream absorption. This impact, however, may intensify gastroparesis symptoms, a rare disease in individuals with type 1 diabetes.

The nerves in the stomach do not function properly in gastroparesis, so food stays too long in the stomach. Gastroparesis symptoms include heartburn, bloating, and nausea. Ten patients with type 1 diabetes and gastroparesis were examined in one controlled research. Drinking water with 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of ACV increased significantly by the time that food remained in the stomach compared to drinking plain water.

Timing insulin with meals is very difficult for type 1 diabetics with gastroparesis because it is difficult to predict how long it will take to digest the food.

May Interact With Drugs

A few medicines may interact with ACV: people who take insulin or insulin-stimulating medicines and vinegar may experience dangerously low levels of blood sugar or potassium.

Digoxin (Lanoxin): This medicine reduces potassium levels in your blood. It could reduce potassium after drinking too much apple cider vinegar.

Some diuretic drugs: some diuretic drugs can excrete potassium. Someone should not consume these drugs with extensive amounts of vinegar to prevent potassium levels from dropping too low.

Can Burn the Throat

Drinking too much apple cider vinegar can cause burns of the esophageal (throat). The most prevalent acid that caused throat burns was a kid who accidentally swallowed vinegar. Researchers suggested that vinegar should be deemed a powerful caustic substance and stored in containers that are childproof.

However, one report shows that ACV burned a woman’s throat. The woman said that six months after the incident she encountered pain and trouble swallowing.

Can Burn the Skin

ACV can also cause burns when applied to the skin because of its strong acidic nature. In one case, after applying several drops of apple cider vinegar to remove two moles, a 14-year-old girl created erosions on her nose based on a remedy she had seen on the web.

In another 6-year-old boy with uncommon health problems developed leg burns after his mom handled his leg infection with apple cider vinegar. Several anecdotal reports of burns induced by applying apple cider vinegar to the skin are also available online.
